A THIRSTY burglar downed a can of Foster’s after breaking into a woman’s flat – but left the empty tin at the scene.

Antoni Adams faces a custodial term after forcing his way into the home on Canon Cockin Street, Sunderland, on the evening of July 14.

While the occupant was out, Adams carried out an untidy search while helping himself to a can of lager from the fridge.

But he was caught in the act after the tenant returned home and looked up at her flat – only to see Adams looking out of the window back at her.

The 32-year-old sheepishly scurried out of the flat and made off, but in his haste, he inadvertently left the empty can of Foster’s in the victim’s kitchen.

When police attended the scene the can was seized, with the Force’s Scientific Support Unit subsequently carrying out tests that came back as a forensic match to Adams.

On Tuesday Adams, of Warwick Terrace, Sunderland, admitted burglary when he appeared at Newcastle Crown Court.

He has been remanded in custody until he is due to be sentenced at the same court on February 19, 2021.

Detective Chief Inspector Michelle Robson, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is an incredibly intrusive crime and it must have been awful for the victim to return home and catch an intruder red-handed inside her flat.

“Unfortunately for Adams, in his desperation to get away after being disturbed, he left behind an empty can of Foster’s that he had swiped from the fridge and drunk.

“That allowed our brilliant forensic team to do what they do best – and it was only a matter of time before we could prove Adams’ involvement irrefutably.

“We will not tolerate behaviour of this kind and make no apology for continuing to put burglars and thieves before the courts.

“I would ask the public to continue to work with us as we head towards Christmas – please make sure your doors are locked and any valuables kept out of sight. If you see anybody acting suspiciously in your area, please get in touch.”
