YEAR One pupils at Stroud School in Romsey have been celebrating Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing and a Hampshire resident!
The children really enjoyed Florence Nightingale Day, learning about her life and work, most notably during the Crimean War.
They made lanterns and investigated artefacts from her lifetime.
At the end of the day, the classroom was turned into an old, dirty hospital and the young ‘nurses’ transformed the hospital into a clean hospital, whilst feeding the injured soldiers, reading to them by lamp light and writing letters using a quill and ink.
This year saw the 200th anniversary of the birth of the ‘Lady with the Lamp’.
Florence Nightingale lived at Embley Park near Romsey, just a few miles from Stroud School, and is buried at West Wellow, also very close by.
