A FAST food chain is to open its first branch in the North-East following on from the huge success of branches across Europe.

Jollibee UK, which only has a handful of stores in the UK including in London and Liverpool, has seen planning permission for a site in Newcastle approved.

The Filipino chain claims to serve "Asia's favourite fried chicken" and has become famous for serving up its Chickenjoy, Jolly Spaghetti, and Yumburger dishes.

It is understood that the chain will open its first North-East store inside a former sweet shop on Northumberland Street.

When Jollibee opened its first UK store in London's Earl's Court two years ago, thousands were seen queing for a taste of the Phillipines.

On social media, one person captured the scene almost two weeks after its London store opened.

The same was reported when Jollibee opened its first site in the North-of-England, in Liverpool earlier this year.

A spokesperson for RR Planning, who have submitted plans on behalf of Jollibee UK, told The Northern Echo: "It's a great thing for Newcastle and it will hopefully create lots of jobs in the city and help to regenerate the High Street.

"First one opened in the UK in Earls Court, people came from Paris to visit Jollibee there. It's extremely popular."

In the now approved planning application, a comment from RR Planning said the restaurant would provide a "modern comfortable" eating environment with affordable price points "providing value for money."

It is also understood Jollibee in Newcastle will open towards the beginning of 2021.
