THERE have been 1,348 new coronavirus cases recorded in the North-East and North Yorkshire since Wednesday.

The Government said a further 280 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Thursday. This brings the UK total to 45,955.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been 61,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK.

The Government said that, as of 9am on Thursday, there had been a further 23,065 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK. It brings the total number of cases in the UK to 965,340. There have been a total of 69,890 in the region.

  • Gateshead: 4,743 was 4623, an increase of 120
  • Hartlepool: 2,194 was 2,153, an increase of 4
  • Middlesbrough: 3,390 was 3,329, an increase of 61
  • Newcastle: 8,568 was 8,424, an increase of 144
  • North Tyneside: 3,905 was 3,820, an increase of 85
  • North Yorkshire: 7,630 was 7,470, an increase of 160
  • Northumberland: 5.158 was 5,055, an increase of 103
  • Redcar & Cleveland: 2,423 was 2,374, an increase of 49
  • South Tyneside: 3,533 was 3,469, an increase of 64
  • Stockton: 4,408 was 4,310, an increase of 98
  • Sunderland: 7,044 was 6,921, an increase of 123
