PUMPKIN picking has been increasing in popularity over the last couple of years, but this year even more of us are enjoying the family fun time outdoors.

But the demand has seen some farms run out of stocks earlier than anticipated, and others are running ticketed trips in a bid to keep control of numbers to keep farms Covid-secure.

This is the first year that Brymor Ice Cream has opened up a field to pumpkin picking, as well as a Halloween trail and maize maze, both free to enter.

Penny Chapman, from Brymor, said: "This is the first year we have done pumpkins, so we didn't advertise too much other than on our social media and a sign on the driveway, but it has gone really well.

"We're only opening it at weekends and for half term so there are still plenty left.

"It think people are wanting to spend time outside with the family and not be cooped up inside."

Atley Hill Farm, based just outside of Scorton, near Richmond, has announced on Facebook that it is on the last of its pumpkins. The farm has been running pumpkin picking for the last few years but said this year had seen "unprecedented demand." They promised next year would be "bigger than ever."

Spilman's Farm, at Sessay, near Thirsk, is also running pumpkin picking, but customers must book a timeslot online.

Neeps and Tatties Greengrocers, Richmond, said it was using a local supplier at Newton-le-Willows, and still had plenty left – but expected sales to spike next week nearer to Halloween.
