A MAN in his 70s is fighting for his life following a crash in Sunderland.

Northumbria Police said officers received a report of a one-vehicle collision involving a Renault Megane in the Leechmere Road area of the city, at 3.30pm on Monday.

The spokesperson said: A man in his 70s has been left in a life threatening condition following a collision in Sunderland. The car in question was spotted travelling south east along Essen Way when it drove on to the roundabout and collided with street furniture before coming to a stop.

"It was then seen leaving the roundabout before coming to a halt in a near-by garden.

"Our officers were at the scene and administrated CPR to the driver, a 76-year-old man.

"He was then taken to hospital, where he remains in a life-threatening condition."

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident and are especially interested in hearing from anybody who has dash cam footage.
