THE cost of homes in the UK are rising year on year - but living near iconic landmarks can raise the value of your home by thousands of pounds, according to a study.

Homes within a three-mile radius of some of the UKs most iconic landmarks have seen big increases in value, compared with homes outside the area.

Two North-East landmarks have made the country's top 10 which increase property values the most, with one adding as much as £66,127 to surrounding homes.

Homedit has analysed house prices surrounding famous UK landmarks on Zoopla and compared prices in the nearby area.

It has worked out the differences in housing costs based on properties that were for sale on the property website on September 25.

In the North-East it found Durham Cathedral upped home values by around 41 per cent, with homes in the area seeing an extra £66,127 added to them.

Meanwhile further up the A1, The Angel of the North near Gateshead saw house prices in the immediate area increase by around 22 per cent, £32,000.

Although not in the top 10 but of notable interest, the Tyne Bridge, between Newcastle and Gateshead, has seen house prices increase by 4 per cent, the equivalent of £8,374.
