STUDENTS have been arriving in the region this weekend ahead of a freshers’ week like no other.

With the North-East’s university cities subject to local lockdown restrictions to combat the risk of Covid-19, the traditional socialising and carousing will be curtailed.

Bars will have to close at 10pm but concerns of ‘super spreaders’ congregating at house parties have been raised from permanent residents in the densely populated student areas of Durham.

Their arrival of thousands of undergraduates comes as hundreds of young people in Glasgow and Manchester have been quarantined after outbreaks in their halls of residence.

Durham University has measures in place to make learning centres ‘Covid secure’ and students will be asked to sign a pledge to act responsibly within their new community.
