A FURTHER 609 people have tested positive for Covid in the North-East and North Yorkshire.

The Government said that as of 9am on Thursday, there had been a further 6,634 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK, taking the overall number of cases confirmed to 416,363.

It said a further 40 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Thursday. This brings the UK total to 41,902.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 57,600 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

County Durham: 4,397 was 4,316

Darlington: 726 was 717  

Gateshead:  2,003 was 1,961  

Hartlepool: 863 was 844

Middlesbrough: 1,357 was 1,335

Newcastle: 2,770 was 2,678  

North Tyneside: 1,440 was 1,403  

North Yorkshire: 3,441 was 3,379  

Northumberland: 2,247 was 2,186  

Redcar and Cleveland: 899 was 886

South Tyneside: 1,656 was 1,615

Stockton: 1,282 was 1,262  

Sunderland: 2,843 was 2,757
