THE sixth form of a Hartlepool school has been temporarily closed for a deep clean after three positive cases of covid.

The sixth form - Years 12 and 13 - at English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College in Hartlepool has been temporarily closed for deep cleansing following three confirmed cases of coronavirus.

Years 7 to 11 can head to class as normal as other year groups are not affected due to year group bubbles, meaning the rest of the school continues to operate.

Headteacher Stephen Hammond has reassured parents that swift action was taken as soon as the situation was realised.

All three cases are connected to the same social group of friends while 27 students identified as close contacts to them are currently self-isolating.

A specialist company will carry out the deep clean tomorrow, Wednesday, September 23, and the sixth form is expected to re-open on Thursday.

Mr Hammond said: “Due to the fact that all three confirmed cases relate to the same group of friends then we feel that a deep clean of the sixth form building is an appropriate response.”

The school created five separate year group bubbles covering Years 7-11 and another for Years 12 and 13, which is why other groups are safe to return to school as normal.
