A MAN has been arrested as part of an attempted murder investigation in North Shields.

Shortly after 5.20am today police were called to an address on Stephenson Street after a woman had been assaulted.

Emergency services attended at the scene and found a woman with serious injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article.

She was taken to hospital where she remains. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening at this time.

An investigation was launched into the incident and a 35-year-old man located inside the address was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in police custody and is assisting officers with their enquiries.

Detective Inspector Jonny Pallace, of Northumbria Police, is now appealing for any witnesses to come forward with information as enquiries continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“This has clearly been a very serious incident that has resulted in a woman suffering serious neck injuries and she continues to receive treatment in hospital.

“We are currently talking to one man in connection with this incident who was located at the scene, and he will continue to assist detectives over the coming hours.

“Our investigation remains at an early stage, but we currently believe all parties were known to each other and we are not currently looking for any other suspects at this time.

“A team of officers will remain in the area throughout this afternoon to carry out a range of enquiries and offer any reassurance to the public.

“I am now asking anyone who lives in that area, who may have heard any kind of disturbance in the early hours of this morning, to come forward. Your information, no matter how insignificant you feel it may be, could be crucial as we look to build a clear picture of what has happened.”
