RESIDENTS across Darlington are invited to have their say on a strategy to protect and enhance trees and woodland in the borough.

A draft Tree and Woodland Strategy for 2021-2031, developed by Darlington Council, is open for residents to have their say.

The strategy aims to manage and increase trees across the borough to protect the town's heritage of trees and provide an environmental amenity for the future.

Councillor Andy Keir cabinet member for local services, said: “We know people want to live in a pleasant environment that is clean, green and safe and that is why it is part of our vision for the future of Darlington.

“Trees and woodland areas play a vital and integral part in achieving this by cleaning the air we breathe, providing a habitat for plants and animal species and creating an attractive environment for people to live in and to visit.

“Many trees are long-lived, offering enjoyment and a range of benefits – they help reduce air pollution and help prevent flooding by intercepting rainfall and allowing it to disperse into the ground at a reduced rate to be absorbed by the soil.

“Trees also contribute significantly to the reduction of carbon dioxide and are therefore integral to the wellbeing of the planet and link with the Council’s Climate Change Declaration."
