THE North-East areas which have seen the largest rise in Covid-19 infections has been revealed - and it shows the town which has seen the highest rise in case in the past week.

An interactive map using Public Health England data highlights the areas that have seen a rise in Covid-19 cases between September 7 and 13, reported by September 15.

Areas that have seen more than 2 cases are flagged, meanwhile any areas that have seen a dramatic rise, i.e 10 or more are also identified.

This data has revealed every town that has seen a rise in infections, over the seven day period, and shows just exactly where the problem areas are.

It also shows the areas where new infections have reached double-figures in the space of a week, and the town with the highest NEW cases.

According to this data, Hebburn has seen the highest number of new cases combined, with 23 in Hebburn North, 6 in Hebburn West and 15 in Hebburn South, bringing it to a total of 44.

The town is in South Tyneside, which as a district has seen infection rates climb up from 60.9 to 93.4 in seven days, with 141 new cases.

The South Shields East, Brockley Whins, Biddick Hill, West Boldon, Whitburn & Marsden wards in South Tyneside have all reported 10 new cases each in the past week.

South Tyneside is currently under local lockdown-style restrictions.

'The virus is spreading most in homes, hospitality venues and through sports'

Yesterday, responding to the official announcement of new restrictions in the area, Tom Hall, Director of Public Health at South Tyneside Council said: "Test and trace data shows that the virus is spreading most in homes, hospitality venues and through grassroots sports which is why restrictions are being imposed in these areas.

"We recognise these new restrictions will be challenging but it is absolutely essential that everyone follows these rules as well as the national guidance around social distancing, and thorough and regular handwashing."

'We can beat this virus but only if we play our part'

Meanwhile, Councillor Iain Malcolm, leader of South Tyneside Council, yesterday said: "Increasing infection rates across the North East spurred the seven local authorities to work together and take decisive action to curb the spread of the virus, developing evidence-based interventions while still keeping our economy open for business.

"The new measures are about protecting our Borough and the wider region. The North East is a compact geographic area where people regularly cross local authority borders for work, education and leisure.  By working decisively as one with our neighbouring councils we aim to prevent a full lockdown which would devastate our economic recovery.

"However, this will only be possible if people follow the rules and guidance. Now more than ever I call on each and every one of you to stand firm and do your bit. Together we can beat this virus but only if we all play our part."
