LOCKDOWN restrictions will come into force in parts of the North-East - but where exactly is affected?

New lockdown restrictions have been unveiled affecting County Durham, Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, Northumberland, South Tyneside and North Tyneside.

But some have been left puzzled as to whether new lockdown restrictions includes areas that are historically part of another county.

CONFIRMED: Tough new lockdown restrictions for the North-East from TONIGHT

On social media, people asked for clarification on whether parts of Teesside classed as County Durham, are affected by the new rules.

And after it was first reported that County Durham was going into lockdown, Darlington MP Peter Gibson issued an update for concerned residents.

But the lockdown will only take effect by each local authority area only.

For instance, residents living in County Durham, who are served by Durham County Council will face lockdown restrictions.

But in Darlington, although the town is historically in County Durham, residents will not face a lockdown as it is served by a different council.

The same applies on Teesside, where Billingham is historically in County Durham, but under the responsibility of Stockton Borough Council.

It comes as several councils, Northumberland County Council, Durham County Council, North Tyneside Council, South Tyneside Council, Sunderland City Council, Newcastle City Council and Gateshead Council asked for tougher restrictions to be imposed.

That means residents in those local authority areas are affected by new rules from midnight tonight.
