It’s been an unusual summer for Brits, who have been forced to cancel holidays abroad and practice social distancing measures in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the pandemic hasn’t stopped County Durham criminals over summer, as the overall number of crimes reported has increased by around 9.5 percent.

This information was sourced from the most up to date police data, using crime statistics from June and July 2019/2020.

Here is everything you need to know about County Durham crimes committed in summer and how the figures compare to last year's data.

2019 VS 2020- how do the number of crimes reported compare?

In 2019, 10819 crimes were reported in County Durham compared to 11965 reports made in 2020- this is an increase of around 9.5 per cent.

Across both years, violent and sexual offences is the most reported crime in County Durham- but there has been a 14 per cent increase in reports of this crime type in summer 2020.

There were also more reports of anti-social behaviour in 2020-  a increased of 24 per cent to be exact.

Public order offences ( e.g. people fighting, being drunk and disorderly), also saw an increase during the summer months  of 2020- 681 public order offences were reported in 2019, compared to 866 reported in 2020.

However, it’s not all bad news for County Durham as some types of crime actually saw a decrease in reports.

As more people are staying at home due to the coronavirus, you would expect the number of burglary reports to go down- according to police figures, this is exactly what happened in County Durham.

The number of burglary reports in summer 2020 saw a decrease of around 22 per cent (22.3%).

Vehicle crime reports were also lower this year (by 34%) along with shoplifting (by 38%).

County Durham streets with the most amount of crime reports this summer

In summer 2019, the County Durham street with the most amount of crime reports was Front Street in Durham, where 101 crimes were reported.

In 2020, Front Street has began to clean up its crime act as 21% less crimes were reported this summer.

The street with the most amount of crimes reported in 2020 is actually Station Road in Stanley, where 91 incidents were reported- this is an increase of around 10% on the year before.

The most commonly reported crime on Station Road was anti-social behaviour (25), followed closely by violent and sexual offences.

Other streets with high summer 2020 crime reports include Durham’s Church Street (63 incidents reported), Albert Street (48 incidents reported) and Victoria Street (45 incidents reported).
