A MAN is due to appear in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal New Year’s Eve crash.

Michael Giblin, 32, of Hendon, Sunderland, died as result of injuries suffered in a two-car collision at the junction of the A690 Durham Road and Premier Road, Sunderland, at 8.15pm on December 31.

Two other occupants – a man and a woman – were also taken to hospital where they received treatment for serious injuries.

An investigation was launched into the circumstances surrounding the collision and a 22-year-old man is due to appear in court later this year charged with a string of offences.

Lewis Urban, 22, of Hill View Square, Sunderland, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He is due to appear before magistrates in South Tyneside on November 24.

Sergeant John Sanderson, of Northumbria Police’s Operations Department, said: “This is a tragic incident that sadly resulted in Michael’s death. Our thoughts remain with his family at this difficult time and we will continue to offer them any support they need.

“A full and thorough investigation has been carried out into what caused Michael’s death and a man will appear in court later this year to answer these charges.

“In the meantime, I would ask members of the public to refrain from commenting or speculating about this case on social media at the risk of potentially prejudicing the live legal proceedings.”
