THE Government said 41,537 people had died in the UK within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of yesterday, an increase of ten on the day before.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 57,300 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

Three people died in hospitals in the North East and Yorkshire on September 2 after testing positive for Covid-19, figures released by NHS England on Friday, September 4 confirmed.

The Government also said that as of 9am yesterday, there had been a further 1,940 lab-confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the UK taking the total since the start of the pandemic to 342,351.

In the North East and North Yorkshire, 135 people tested positive for the virus in the same 24 hour period taking the total of lad-confirmed cases to 20,451 in the region.

The figures for each local authority area were: County Durham: 3,561 was 3,548; Darlington: 632 no change; Gateshead: 1,416 was 1,394; Hartlepool: 674 was 664; Middlesbrough: 1,137 was 1,127; Newcastle: 1,745 was 1,728; North Tyneside: 1,006 was 998; North Yorkshire: 2,780 was 2,768; Northumberland: 1,713 was 1,700; Redcar and Cleveland: 776 was 770; South Tyneside: 1,081 was 1,072; Stockton: 1,060 was 1,057; Sunderland: 1,888 was 1,882 and York: 982 was 976.
