A kind-hearted dog called Dillon has been helping to save the lives of other dogs by giving blood.

Dillon, a six year old German Shepherd/Collie-cross, was adopted by Amy Emerton and her husband Aaron four years ago, and from day one, Dillon became a laid back and loving part of the family.

Amy said: "We were looking for a dog to complete our family. We visited Dogs Trust Darlington and saw Dillon. He wasn't jumping around everywhere, he was just in the enclosure, minding his own business, and we just fell in love with him.

"He pulled at our heart strings and he is just such a great, calm character. He is my husband's best friend."

Amy wanted Dillon to make a difference not just to their lives, but to others too, so Dillon was enrolled with the Pet Blood Bank UK.

Amy said: "I'm really pleased Dillon has been able to help so many other dogs in this way and am so proud of him. I'm sure if he knew, he'd feel the same way too."

Dillon and Amy also volunteer for Wag and Company – a North-East visiting dogs charity befriending older dog lovers in their own homes as well as in care or in hospitals – and spend their time helping people to combat loneliness.

Dillon's excellent nature also makes him a happy companion for Amy's grandmother.

Amy said: "Dillon and I visit The Lawns care home in Darlington, (when not in Covid-19 restrictions) as a friendship team. We love seeing the residents and staff. Dillon loves being spoilt with treats and the smiles on the faces of the residents when they see Dillon is priceless.

"Dillon also makes my Nana’s day when we go a visit. She has dementia and loves it when she sees Dillon, we even go a little walk together if the weather is good and she is feeling well enough.

"Dillon is so calm and kind, we knew he would be the perfect pet, and the perfect dog to help other people."

Dillon gives blood at least once every three months and usually visits the care home once a fortnight.

Amy said: "It is so rewarding. As soon as the care home residents see Dillon, their faces light up. He is making such a difference, it is a great feeling."

When not helping others, Dillon loves playing with his rugby ball, likes to chase squirrels and hanging out with Amy and Arron's other dog, Ringo, who was rescued from Romania.
