AN MP is reminding his people not to forget VJ Day and those who fought in the Far East conflict.

Saturday, August 15 sees the nation mark the 75th anniversary of VJ, or Victory in Japan, Day which honours the British and Commonwealth Tri-Service Forces – whilst marking the day on which Japan surrendered in the Second World War, bringing the conflict to an end.

The Royal British Legion will honour the event with a national two minute silence, as well as the National Memorial Arboretum, which will be lead by Prince Charles paying tribute to those who fought. The proceedings will be shown on BBC One from 9.30am on Saturday.

Stockton North Labour MP Alex Cunningham is among those who will be marking the day.

“75 years ago, while celebrations were happening for VE Day, thousands of service people were still in the Far East fighting the war – including my late father-in-law, Joe Dobson,” he said.

“It is important we acknowledge the contributions of the Commonwealth forces, who came from across the globe – from Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and Australasia to form one of the most multicultural forces in history.

“I’ll be taking time to remember those who fought in the Far East, who endured unthinkable horrors and are often overlooked. I would encourage my constituents to join in,check out the Legion’s website for the stories of those who lived through the conflict and ensure they are properly recognised.”
