A RESCUE dog who was found as a stray more than two years ago has celebrated his third birthday.

Greyhound Rowland, who only has three legs, lives at Dogs Trust’s rehoming centre in Darlington and spent the day being spoiled by his canine carers.

Rowland is a firm favourite at the Sadberge centre but carers are hoping to find him a new home.

He was left the fend for himself at six months old, and has also had to recover from surgery to his rear left leg.

The Northern Echo:

He ended up having a full limb amputation at the start of the year but he has recovered well and has adapted to life with three legs.

Sue Embleton, centre manager, said: “After everything he has been through, it is great to see Rowland so happy. As part of his birthday celebration he received lots of squeaky toys and a dog-friendly birthday cake, with his canine carers holding a little socially distanced party for him in our outside training area.

“He definitely prefers human companionship to other dogs and Rowland is very well behaved. He is just happy to lie on his cosy bed with his toys and have a lazy day. Rowland loves his toys and the soft, squeaky ones are his favourite; he’s very gentle and takes really good care of them.

“Everyone at the centre has their fingers and paws crossed that three might actually be the magic number for Rowland and get another chance at a forever home this year.”

From a potential new home, Rowland would benefit from having someone around most of the day to keep him company and he would prefer to be the only family pet. He has a weakness for lots of soft, squeaky toys and would also like a secure garden to explore and play in.

Dogs Trust rehoming centres are currently not open for public browsing but people can still make an appointment to adopt or bring a dog to them.

The charity has set up new processes which include social distancing measures to help keep staff and visitors safe.
