AN east Cleveland bus service has been re-routed by Arriva North East after complaints from passengers.

The number 62 service had been revised to run via Grewgrass Lane, on the outskirts of Redcar, between the A174 and the junction of Longbeck Lane, New Marske.

The aim was to speed up journeys from New Marske to Redcar by operating on a more direct route than it previously took.

But many local residents contacted Arriva to express safety concerns about the use of Grewgrass Lane, which is narrow with several bends, and saw buses having to weave around stationary vehicles.

Councillor Vera Rider, who represents the Longbeck ward on Redcar and Cleveland Council, took up the complaints and also contacted police, council highways officers and Redcar MP Jacob Young to call for a re-think.

Arriva North East has now re-routed the number 62, cutting out Grewgrass Lane.

Cllr Rider said she was “delighted” with the result and thanked those who got involved.

A spokeswoman for Arriva North East said risk assessments had previously been undertaken to assess the use of Grewgrass Lane and no significant issues were identified to deem it an immediate risk.

She said: “However, following concerns raised by local residents – many of whom have contacted Arriva directly regarding this matter – we reviewed this decision and as a result we have decided to re-route the service to operate via the A174 with immediate effect to alleviate the concerns raised.”
