THE UKs top ten secret beaches have been revealed - and five of them are in the North-East and North Yorkshire.

Some of the lesser-known beaches in the region have scored extremely highly according to data from TripAdvisor.

Research carried out by CV Villas has revealed the 'most underrated beaches' with the best reviews in England.

It has identified Embleton Bay in Northumberland as the top spot, followed by Ross Back Sands, also in Northumberland.

To find the lesser-known, but best-rated beaches, CV Villas crunched the data of hundreds of beaches which had received fewer than the average amount of reviews on TripAdvisor to find out which had received the highest percentage of excellent reviews.

Marske Sands Beach has 87.1 percent excellent reviews on TripAdvisor, making it the 6th best hidden gem beach in England.

The beach boasts parking, public toilets and is perfect for making sandcastles and exploring the nearby rock pools. This TripAdvisor review praises the stunning coastal location:

"This place is a hidden gem. Nothing too fancy, normal seaside shops, just walk along the promenade, casually strolling, taking in the surroundings, and most importantly the air.

"There is plenty for the children to do, sandcastles, rock pools to explore, just an old fashioned day out, there are good places galore...wheelchair friendly paths, no hassle no fuss and cheap. Try it I dare you."
