AN elderly woman’s bag has been stolen in a burglary at her home in Stanley.

It is believed the 87-year-old woman and her partner were in the living room getting ready to go for a walk when the suspect entered through the back door and removed the handbag.

The theft is believed to have happened sometime between 12pm and 3pm last Thursday at their home address on Tweed Terrace. The brown leather bag contained around £300, a pair of glasses and a red leather purse.

Detectives are now keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time who may have seen something.

Investigating Officer Ruth Taylor from Stanley CID said: “This crime has had a huge impact on the elderly victim who has been left feeling unsafe in her own home.

“We would urge local residents to remain vigilant and keep their doors locked even when they are in the house.”
