SUNDERLAND Airshow fans are getting the chance to relive some of their favourite moments in a new online event.

This year’s Airshow was due to be held at Roker and Seaburn beaches between Friday and Sunday.

It would have been the 32nd Airshow, aiming to top last year’s displays which included the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the RAF Typhoon and the Bronco display team. Crowds also enjoyed music sets at the main stage from Scouting For Girls, Sophie Ellis and DJ Pat Sharp.

However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Sunderland City Council made the decision to cancel this year’s seafront event as well as other events that would have been taking place in the city throughout the summer.

At the time, Sunderland City Council’s assistant director of culture and events, Victoria French said: “We understand that this news will cause disappointment for lots of people but hope that everyone will appreciate that the health and wellbeing of our communities is at the forefront of our decision-making process. We look forward to welcoming everyone again next year.”

Sunderland City Council are now announcing the launch of Sunderland Airshow Revisited, an online event combining classic footage and brand-new content for anyone to watch.

Taking place from Friday to Sunday, fans of the annual event can look back on some of the best flying displays from over the years, as well as brand new interviews with the flying teams. There will also be the chance to relive some of your favourite music performances that have taken to the main stage.

Councillor John Kelly, Portfolio Holder for Vibrant City, said: “Many of us were devastated at the cancellation of this years Sunderland International Airshow. While we would have loved to be down at the beaches watching our favourite displays, the health and safety of our residents is the most important thing right now.

“The new Sunderland Airshow Revisited is brilliant way for us to continue our tradition, and to reminisce on the brilliant entertainment that has taken place in our vibrant city over the last 32 years. Each year we deliver an impressive event that shows what Sunderland and its beautiful seafront has to offer, and this year will be no different.”
