A POPULAR Dales attraction welcomed a special visitor to celebrate the reopening of its visitor centre.

Chancellor and Richmondshire MP Rishi Sunak visited the Wensleydale Creamery at Hawes to meet with staff and tour the recently reopened Cheese Experience.

He observed the Creamery’s master cheesemakers in action and turned his hand to the art of cheese grading in the visitor centre, which attracts 350,000 people each year.

He recognised the Creamery’s quick and innovative response in bringing its shop offering online in March when lockdown began.

Mr Sunak said: “It’s a privilege to visit and celebrate the reopening of the Wensleydale Creamery Visitor Centre, an iconic business with deep rooted heritage in the Yorkshire Dales, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area."

Trish Cannon, visitor centre director, said: “We’ve worked extremely hard to put measures in place to ensure the safety of our staff and visitors whilst creating a friendly environment for everyone to visit, and we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback so far."
