EXTRA officers will be on patrol this weekend to ensure revellers behave responsibly when drinking in pubs for the first time in months.

With many bars opening for the first time since lockdown began in March, the region’s police forces are bracing themselves to deal with a potential increase in alcohol-related disorder.

Chief Superintendent Ciaron Irvine of Cleveland Police said: “We have been working with partners and local businesses in light of the changes that will see recreational and licensed premises reopen this weekend.

  • We will reporting live from pubs as they reopen to the public on Saturday

“ Our joint operational responses will see additional officers and staff on duty, patrolling for reassurance purposes and to respond to any incidents effectively.

“Our response will be absolutely in accordance with the national policing response of engage, explain, educate and only where necessary, taking enforcement action.

“I would like to take this opportunity to remind people of the importance of following the new rules, in licensed premises in particular, knowing their limits and making their day as safe as possible through sensible alcohol consumption.”

Chief Supt Irvine added that the public has been ‘outstanding’ in supporting the NHS and the last thing the police want to see is A&E overwhelmed with alcohol-related injuries.
