PEOPLE are being asked to take a moment to remember all our servicemen and women on Armed Forces Day today and share their messages.

Ordinarily there would a major parade in Redcar as well as entertainment as thousands of people celebrate the day.

However, this year people are being asked to give thanks in their own way and can share messages – and their own ‘salute’ - on the Armed Forces Day website.

Many people have already shared images of themselves, family and friends saluting on the site or on the Armed Forces Day or Twitter at @ArmedForcesDay.

Chairman of Redcar Royal British Legion, Eric Howden BEM, who served in the Royal Army Ordinance Corp for nine years, said people could simply take a minute to remember our servicemen and women.

He said: “We would ask everyone to take a moment to reflect on what our armed forces men and women have done in the past, are doing in the present and what they will do in the future.

“We have troops right now who are actually working hospitals and others serving overseas who have not been able to come home. I would urge anyone just to take that minute to reflect.”

Councillor Karen King, deputy leader of Redcar & Cleveland Council, said: “We are very proud of all our servicemen and women and Armed Forces Day is a major highlight of the year.

"It was a shame it had to be cancelled this year as it is a chance to reflect but is also an upbeat, family-focused, celebratory event. I have no doubt many of us will still take the opportunity to remember all those who have served past and present in whatever way they can.”

Mr Howden explained that Armed Forces Day was usually a big fundraising day but people are still able to donate online at www.britishlegion.org.uk
