A HERITAGE railway is on the lookout for volunteers with upholstery skills and some unwanted memorabilia.

Although the Wensleydale Railway is currently off–line, work continues behind the scenes in preparation for the non-too distant re-opening of operations.

Its first appeal is for anyone with the skills that could help renovate five vintage benches that need re-upholstering. Additionally they are on the lookout for any pre-war LNER clothing particularly hats or buttons. This will assist in making-up uniforms for their volunteers.

Helen Ashworth, the railway’s volunteer coordinator, said: “The work at Leeming Bar is nearing completion and as part of the plan we would like to have volunteers to greet people wearing period uniforms.

“We already have some old clothing but we are always on the lookout for more particularly an LNER hat; we have one, but would like another.”

Last year, Wensleydale Railway received a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £368,000 for a heritage project. This will soon see the restoration of the Victorian station building, delivery of an education and community engagement programme and provision of heritage-themed activities at Leeming Bar Station, near Bedale. They would also appreciate any unwanted office furniture.
