Here are the key coronavirus updates from the last 24-hours.

  • A FURTHER three people have died in hospitals across the region after testing positive for coronavirus.
  • South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust reported 1 death as did York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Gateshead Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. A spokesperson for NHS England said: "Patients were aged between 35 and 98 years old. Eight patients, aged between 35 and 92, had no known underlying health conditions. Their families have been informed."
  • The UK coronavirus death toll has risen by 184, taking the total number of deaths to 42,153.
  • Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the Commons news that a new drug has been proven to reduce the deadliness of Covid-19 is an "important moment" in the fight against the virus.
  • Mr Hancock said that 240,000 doses of the drug dexamethasone are "in stock and on order".

  • At the daily government coronavirus press briefing Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden hailed the return of the Premier League as a "hugely symbolic moment" in the coronavirus recovery.
  • With the imminent return of the Premier League, Oliver Dowden warned fans that there was "nothing to be gained" from crowding outside stadiums while football matches were going on.
  • The Cabinet minister also said he was working closely to get grassroots and community sport back up and running "as soon as it is safe to do so - with an aim of the start of July at the very earliest".
  • The Culture Secretary said it would be "exceptionally difficult" for theatres to reopen because of social distancing rules, and he is currently having regular discussions across Government to see what further support can be given to venues.
  • Mr Dowden indicated that fans could return to stadiums before audiences would be allowed back into theatres. He told the press conference: "I understand the need for all of these venues to return with people in them and, indeed, eventually without social distancing.
