A PINT-sized performer has put his own spin on spreading the social distancing message – by making a video to explain the rules.

Henry Sangster, five, is due back at Richmond Methodist Primary School next week when it re-opens.

The school, like others across the county, has put in place measures to keep their pupils and staff safe.

Henry wanted to spread the message about handwashing, social distancing and not being able to eat lunch in the dining room before he went back.

Henry’s parents, Jessica and Ross, said: “Henry has been home schooling during lockdown. We had received guidance from the school the previous evening about the measures which will be in place for the children returning.

“So we decided to put a video together introducing the guidance to Henry in a fun way.

“It was fun to do and Henry enjoyed making the video for his friends – but it also means that when he goes back he isn’t surprised or worried about the new systems in place.

They added that Henry has coped well with lockdown but is desperate to get back to school to see his friends and teacher – even though it will be in a socially distanced way.

They also said Henry’s school has been fantastic.

Mrs Sangster said: “The school have been brilliant in providing daily lessons for the children, that have been both educational and fun.

“The learning has been really interactive and school have encouraged Henry and his friends to make videos to keep in touch with each other.”

Henry said: “I enjoyed making this video for my friends because I miss school and I am excited to go back and see them and Mrs Swinbank, my teacher.”

Mr and Mrs Sangster's daughter Olivia also makes a small appearance in the clip.

Although Olivia is just two, she loves dressing up in Henry’s uniform and pretending she’s at school.

Headteacher Sharon Stevenson said: “After writing the longest letter I had ever written to parents – to share our plans and new routines for a safe return to school – Henry from our Foundation Stage made the best video ever!He showed us how we can be kind and helpful and keep our RMS family safe and well at school."

“We have been so proud of Henry's learning at home and his amazing video made me cry with laughter.

“Definitely one of my lockdown highlights.”

County Councillor Patrick Mulligan, Executive Member for Education and Skills said: “It’s wonderful to see young people like Henry taking social distancing measures seriously as he prepares to return to school.

“He’s managed to speak about vital messages in just 53 seconds, making it easy to understand for him and his friends.

“Young people across the county will have a lot to adapt to when they return but rest assured every school will offer all the support they can to make sure children are safe and happy.”

Pupils across the county will return to school from June 1.

Measures to prevent the further spread of Covid-19 have been put in place in each school opening, including staggered opening times, one-way systems in hallways and eating lunch in classrooms rather than the dining hall.
