THE Redcar MP is to play a role in redevelopment of the town's steelworks site, at a "pivotal" time for the scheme.

Jacob Young, Conservative MP for Redcar, has been appointed to the South Tees Development Corporation board by Tees Valley Mayor and chairman of the corporation Ben Houchen.

The news comes just a month after Mr Houchen secured the 870-acres of land owned by SSI following the successful outcome of the Compulsory Purchase Proceedings to take control of the land.

This land joined the 1,420 acres, more than half of all developable land within the site, that was secured in February last year when a struck a deal with Tata Steel Europe.

Within days of the CPO inquiry finding in favour of the Development Corporation, work began, with Hartlepool-based Seymour Civil Engineering starting clearance and site preparation work at the124-acre site.

Mr Young said: “I’m delighted that the mayor has invited me to join the board at this pivotal time for the Development Corporation.

“Now we have taken full control of the former steelworks site, we‘ll be working together to bring about the transformation the site needs and start to deliver the new jobs and investment for our area."
