FUNDRAISING pages have been set up in the name of a 19-year-old who was shot dead in Blackburn.

Aya Hachem was the victim of a ‘senseless’ shooting in King Street, Blackburn on Sunday.

The second-year law student at Salford University was walking along the street when she was shot at.

Following the Lebanon-born student’s death, there has been an influx of people wishing to pay their respects by setting up funding pages in her honour.

One Just Giving page was set up by 21-year-old Hannan Qazi from East London, who saw the story on social media.

He said: “I have been overwhelmed by the amount of support from everyone and it feels quite surreal for me.

“I just wanted to build a masjid (house of worship) on behalf of Aya.

“I have spoken to her brother and the family who are grateful this many people are coming together to remember Aya with a good cause.

“It is extremely disheartening that this could happen, you cannot fathom it during this holy month of Ramadan.”

The fundraiser is currently just over £30,000 and the initial goal was just £4,800 for one mosque in Niger, Africa.

Mr Qazi said: “To have raised so much money in just one day is overwhelming to me and I am in shock.

“We would get together and show solidarity but to see how quickly we raised the money is mind blowing.

“Everyone felt that pain on hearing of her death and I hope Aya will get the justice she deserves.

“I also want to thank everyone who has donated because this isn’t something I have done myself.”

The page had raised £10,000 in just two hours.

Mr Qazi said: “This will make a huge difference in parts of the world like Niger.

“Many of us do not know her personally but we hope and come together to build this masjid in her name."

Miss Hachem was the eldest daughter of Samar and Ismael Hachem, originally from Lebanon and living in Blackburn.

A second fundraiser has been set up by charity Global One.

The charity said: “As a Muslim Women-led charity, Global One are pledging to build a legacy for sister Aya in the form of water wells for vulnerable women and girls in water scarce communities.

“Donate in the name of Aya for just £300 and guarantee her immeasurable rewards with every drop of water they provide.”

The page has raised over £1,000 so far.
