A PRIMARY school in Horwich has been praised by Ofsted inspectors for its "happy and welcoming" atmosphere.

St Mary's RC Primary School was marked as good by the education watchdog following a recent inspection.

Inspectors from Ofsted found that pupils enjoy coming to school and staff enjoying teaching there.

They commented: "Pupils and staff agree that this is a happy and welcoming school. Pupils and their families are greeted by staff as they arrive each morning. The pupils told us that they enjoy school."

Children told Ofsted their teachers were "kind and helpful". Pupils achievement in the 3Rs ­— reading, writing and mathematics ­— was above national average, said Ofsted.

And the proportion of pupils who met the Year One phonics screening check was "well above" the national average in 2019.

Their learning was said to be complemented by a series of enrichment activities ­—from visiting Bolton Museum to learn about the Egyptians to staying in a chateau and visiting a French market.

Inspectors reported: "Leaders have planned a broad and engaging curriculum. Pupils are well prepared for their next stage of education, including pupils with SEND. They develop skills and knowledge across a range of subjects."

Pupils were said to behave well an play well together, enjoying the new playground area.

Every area of the school was marked as good ­— quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management and early years.

Ofsted reported: "Leaders have ensured that the school is resourced well. Pupils enjoy the wide range of practical activities that teachers plan."
