Road users who need to travel this weekend are advised to plan their journeys as the southbound A19 Tees Viaduct will be closed for essential maintenance work.

The closure will run from 9pm on Friday, May 15 until 6am on Tuesday, May 19.

The crossing is 45 years old this year, the joints on the viaduct need to be replaced.

Four closures have taken place so far, with another one to follow after this weekend on May 29 to June 2 (southbound).

The layout of the road and nature of the work means it can only be carried out safely if one of the A19 carriageways is closed. By shutting the road fully in one direction, Highways England’s team of engineers can work around the clock to complete the job as quickly as possible.

The work is weather permitting, and drivers will be able to follow clearly-signed diversions.

The main southbound diversion is leaving the A19 at A1046 (Haverton Hill/Portrack), south on A1032 (Newport Bridge) to A66/A1032 (Cannon Park), A66 Westbound to A66/A19 interchange.
