FIREFIGHTERS have warned against household waste fires after they attended a garden fire.

Crews were sent out at 7pm to Dunoon Drive in Blackburn where a man had started a fire in his back garden to burn household waste.

The fire quickly spread towards the house, damaging piping, windows, plastic guttering and smoke in the house.

Two crews from White Watch Blackburn were at the scene and managed to get the fire under control before it could damage the inside of the house.

Nobody was injured during the fire, but firefighters have now warned against avoidable fires in back gardens.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "We advise people to not start fires in their gardens just to burn household waste as this can spread quickly to their own houses and their neighbours, even if it is just small.

"Tips will reopen next week, so please wait to go to a tip if you need to remove a lot of waste, but do not attempt to burn it."

Crews spent half an hour putting out the flames.

The team also used a fan to get rid of the smoke in the house.

A tweet from Blackburn Fire read: "This is the result of someone burning household waste in their back garden and it getting out of control.

"Two crews from White Watch Blackburn attended the fire on Dunoon Drive and prevented it from spreading through the entire house. The tips are OPEN next week, don't burn!"
