POLICE are warning the public over scams aimed at selling face masks during the Covid-19 crisis.

Action Fraud have received a number of reports of phishing emails advertising face masks, after rumours that the public may be asked to wear face masks outside once lockdown is lifted.

There have been multiple reports from people who have received a telephone call with an automated messaged purporting to be from the Government, stating that all individuals need to wear a face mask when they leave their residence. The message asks victims to "press one" in order to purchase a mask.

In addition to this, there have been reports from people who have purchased large quantities of face masks online which have not been delivered.

Officers are re-iterating the advice from Action Fraud, which is to be vigilant and not to give any bank details or personal details over the phone.

If anyone thinks that they may have been a victim of fraud, they can contact Cleveland Police on 101 or call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
