FIREFIGHTERS have attended large grass fire in Eston Hills.

Emergency services were called twice to fires, near an equestrian centre on the outskirts of Middlesbrough, yesterday.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Fire Brigade said about 5,000 square metres of grass and gorse was on fire.

Firefighters were initially called at about 2.15pm.

Three appliances attended from Grangetown and Middlesbrough and the fire was extinguished using a hosereel and numerous beaters.

It took just over 90 minutes to put out the fire, with firefighters leaving the scene at 3.50pm.

But a further fire broke out at about 4.10pm, which Cleveland Fire Brigade said was "fanned" by strong winds.

Four appliances attended the incident, from Grangetown, Guisborough, Middlesbrough and Redcar, including an off-road appliance and a water bowser.

It was tackled with hosereels and beaters.

The Friends of Eston Hills, which works alongside the fire brigade, police and council to protect the area, took to Twitter to thank firefighters for their work.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
