A FURTHER 980 people have died after testing positive for the coronavirus – bringing the total to 8,958.

In the North-East and North Yorkshire, a further 51 people have died, bringing the total to 476.

The number of people in hospital as a result of coronavirus is rising in the North East and Yorkshire.

At a Downing Street briefing today, health secretary Matt Hancock said 19,116 coronavirus tests were carried out across Great Britain on Thursday, of which 5,706 came back positive.

He said the number of people in hospital who have tested positive for the disease stood at 19,304, of which 8,958 had died - an increase of 980 on the day before.

It comes as the Department of Health say there are now 3,279 confirmed COVID-19 cases across the region - with Newcastle, County Durham and Sunderland recording the highest cases.

 

As of Friday (April 10), the total number of patient deaths recorded by each trust are: 

- County Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation Trust – 64 (was 56)

- Gateshead Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – 38 (was 28)

- Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – 61 (was 58)

- North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust – 20 (was 17)

- South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – 78 (was 73)

- South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust – 117 (was 105)

Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – 37 (was 34)

- York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – 37 (was 33)

- Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust – 20 (was 17)

- Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (mental health) – 2 (was 2)

- Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (mental health) – 2 (was 2)
