PEOPLE are being warned about what they put down their drains after a huge blob of fat blocked a residential sewer.

An investigation was carried by a team from Northumbrian Water in Bede Terrace, Bowburn, near Durham.

They found six large bin bags full of fats, oils and grease as well as wet wipes when they cleaned out the pipe on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the company said: “It took the team around three hours to remove the blockage.

“We were able to resolve this before the blockage caused any serious damage, but wrongly flushing items like this can have devastating consequences, from flooded homes to environmental pollution.”
