THE NHS have confirmed a further 42 people who tested positive for coronavirus in the region have died.

On Tuesday afternoon (April 7), NHS England confirmed a further 758 COVID-19 patients had died across the country.

It is one of the biggest day-on-day death toll increase since the outbreak began, with the death toll in England standing at 5,655.

In the North-East, the South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have reported the highest number of fatalities.

The death toll in the region now stands at 328.

As of 5pm on April 6, the total number of coronavirus patient deaths reported by each trust:

  • Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust - 47
  • North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust - 16
  • South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - 59
  • South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust - 81
  • Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - 31
  • York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - 24
  • Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust - 14
  • Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust - 2
