POLICE had to send people away from a North Yorkshire beauty spot after they ignored coronavirus restrictions and drove to the area for a walk.

People from Leeds, Keighley, Bradford and Oldham were turned away by officers from Craven Neighbourhood Policing Team who found them heading to Malham Cove, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, today.

All had ignored Government advice to refrain from travelling out of their area for exercise, some travelling more than 50 miles.

The officers were on hand to speak to the people about their behaviour which could aid the spread of Covid-19.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "All the walkers agreed to travel back home and there was no requirement to take any further action.

"As well as engaging with people who are out-and-about, the officers are also continuing hand out leaflets and put up posters in the area to emphasise the “Stay Home, Save Lives, Protect the NHS” emergency message."
