SPECIALIST forensic officers are working in a remote North York Moors location after human remains were discovered in the grounds of an isolated cottage.

The search is being carried out at the former home of a man convicted of harassing his neighbour by repeatedly exposing himself.

Military historian Ken Ward, who repeatedly exposed himself and performed sex acts in front of the woman, was jailed after of his nine-year campaign of a harassment came to a head.

The pervert was finally jailed for five years in 2011 but was released after serving about half of his sentence. Ward was banned from going anywhere near his victim.

For the last few days, North Yorkshire Police have been working at the site near Chop Gate to recover the bones, which are believed to be decades old, and several police vehicles can be seen parked at the hillside cottage.

Due to the nature of the investigation, the force is calling on people not to speculate about the case until they are able to release further details about its investigation.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said specialist forensic investigators are working at the scene to safely recover and record the human remains.

He said: “Police are working with other agencies, including a forensic archaeologist, following the discovery of suspected human bones at a remote location near Chop Gate.

“Although it is too early to say precisely how old these bones are, current forensic investigations suggest that they are not recent, and are likely to be several decades old.

“Specialists are being used to recover and examine them.

“We’d ask people not to speculate online about the nature of the bones while this process is underway.”

The force is believed to have been in contact with neighbouring Cleveland Police throughout the investigation but at present there is no indication that the remains are connected to any missing persons.
