THE number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the North-East and North Yorkshire has increased by more than 1,000 in just one week.

It comes as the region saw its biggest rise in patient deaths as hospitals reported sixty new fatalities on Thursday.

This afternoon, latest figures from the Department of Health revealed the region now had 1,373 confirmed COVID-19 cases, up considerably from 315 reported on Thursday (March 26).

As of Thursday (April 2) the number of cases reported by each affected local authority in the North-East and North Yorkshire are as follows.

- Newcastle 252 was 80

- Sunderland 131 was 27

- County Durham 165 was 29

- Darlington 30 was 5

- Hartlepool 17 was 3

- Redcar & Cleveland 55 was 10

- Stockton 70 was 16

- North Tyneside 113 was 27

- South Tyneside 53 was 10

- Gateshead 95 was 12

- Northumberland 119 was 23

- Middlesbrough 74 was 9

- York 36 was 14

- North Yorkshire 163 was 50
