OFFICERS searching for missing Gateshead man Stewart Liddell found a body on Wednesday evening.

Stewart, 69, was reported missing on Tuesday night after he left his home in Rowlands Gill at 11am to go for his walk.

He did not return and was reported missing to police who have been carrying out an extensive search operation ever since.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Those inquiries have continued into this evening but sadly a body has now been discovered in the area of Chopwell Woods.

"Formal identification is yet to take place but officers do believe the body is that of Stewart and his family have been informed.

"We do not believe there to be any third party involvement in the death and a report will now be prepared for the coroner.

"Thank you to everyone who shared our appeal and we are sad that we couldn't bring you some more positive news."
