AS Covid-19 spreads across the country, many people will struggle to maintain social connections, therefore a new scheme has been created in a bid to combat loneliness for those who are self-isolating alone.

Conservative MP for Stockton South, Matt Vickers, has joined up with Age UK to set up the “Chat to Matt” system so that elderly constituents who live alone, or are isolating alone, from Stockton South can phone up for a chat about “any issues under the sun”.

During this difficult period, people can register to talk to Mr Vickers to talk about their concerns about the virus, their family, what the MP is up to currently or just the weather over the phone if they would like some company.

“My team and I are working 24/7 at the moment to tackle a huge number of issues,” said Mr Vickers.

“These issues include lobbying for more support for certain business sectors, working with the foreign office to help residents trapped abroad and keeping in touch with our local NHS Trust and council.

“We are also busy working with the local charitable organisations and business to help some of the most vulnerable durin this time.

“With all that in mind I think it’s important to set time aside for those who are living through this alone.

“These people need our support now more than ever.”

To get in touch with Mr Vickers call 01642 030195 to reach his office where you will be registered by a member of the MP’s team to receive a call.

You can also get in touch via email on matt.vickers.mp@parliament.uk to book a call slot.

“Please do pick up the phone, or if you know someone who might be interested in having a chat, or find it useless, please do pass over these details,” said Mr Vickers.

Nationally, Age UK have been giving tips for older people on how to cope in isolation during the coronavirus.

These include picking up the phone regularly to talk to friends or families, or reaching out to a charity such as Mind or Samaritans to speak to someone over the phone. Do not keep worries or negative thoughts to yourself.

To keep a healthy mind Age UK also recommend maintaining a routine, getting fresh air in the garden, staying hydrated and remaining active around the house.
