MILLIONS of pounds have been donated to a local hospital, but fears have risen after all events have been postponed.

In 2019 alone, Wrexham Hospital’s League of Friends donated specialist equipment to the Maelor, totalling £264,386.

Chairman of 15 years Margaret Bryden said the aim was to raise another £250,000 this year for more equipment that the hospital needs.

However due to the coronavirus, all fundraising events for the foreseeable have had to be cancelled.

She told the Leader: “Over the last five years alone we have donated over £1m which is a lot of money.

“We’ve bought important equipment like scanners, everything that is not available through the NHS.

“But since this coronavirus, there’s no way people can help now. Everything has had to be postponed because of the lockdown so we have no funds coming in.

“The only money we will be getting is through donations but that is on the decline, people are worried, quite rightly, about the virus and aren’t thinking of anything else.”

The Advertizer's sister paper, the Leader has launched a campaign to support the League of Friends as a way of saying Thank You to the key workers who are on the frontline fight against the disease, saving lives.

Margaret added: “Please donate. This money is donated to different wards at different times depending on what they need, and it is all about what they need.”

In 2019, fundraising efforts allowed over £264,000 to be spend on equipment for 15 different wards at the Maelor.

Margaret told the Leader: “Each year we hope to raise around £250,000. That has been our goal and I’ve been with the charity for nearly 40 years.

“I would like to thank all of the volunteers who have had to stand down because of the virus but I am hoping those volunteers come back once we are up and running again.

“We will still be there when this is over, no matter how long it takes. And any new volunteers that want to join us, we can’t do it without you.

“A big thank you to the staff and trustees who have to make these difficult decisions as well.”
