A GROUP of people who allegedly ram raided a supermarket in Sunderland for alcohol on Friday have been arrested.

Sainsbury's on Station Road in Sunderland was left with "significant damage" after the group reportedly drove a blue car into the store's front.

The store, which had remained closed to the public on Friday (March 27), was understood to have been raided for a 'quantity of alcohol.'

At the time, police said the alleged thieves had been involved in an earlier ram raid at Spar on North Hylton Road.

Police investigating said a 27-year-old man, 37-year-old woman and 50-year-old man had since been arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “A 50-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman have both been arrested on suspicion of burglary. They remain in police custody at this time.

“A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary. He has been released under investigation.”
