THERE are now more than 700 confirmed cases of coronavirus across the North-East and North Yorkshire as the government warned that restrictive measures could last several months.

According to the Department of Health, Newcastle, Sunderland and County Durham remain the region's areas most affected by the number of cases - while Darlington and Hartlepool are among the North-East's lowest.

Latest figures available revealed that out of the UKs 19,522 confirmed cases, 726 had been reported in 14 North-East and North Yorkshire local authority areas.

They came as last night Dr Jenny Harries, deputy chief medical officer for England said restrictive measures to slow the spread of coronavirus would likely continue for six months, based on its slowing rate.

As of Sunday (March 29) the number of cases reported by each affected local authority in the North-East and North Yorkshire are:

- Newcastle 155

- Sunderland 76

- County Durham 81

- Darlington 15

- Hartlepool 11

- Redcar & Cleveland 25

- Stockton 34

- North Tyneside 62

- South Tyneside 27

- Gateshead 44

- Northumberland 61

- Middlesbrough 26

- York 21

- North Yorkshire 88

How many people have been tested nationwide?

As of Sunday, 19,522 people across the UK tested positive for COVID-19 out of 127,737 people.

The current death toll stands at 1,228 with the vast majority of patients understood to have had an underlying health condition.
