A MAN died after a suspected fall onto the road beneath Durham Railway Viaduct.

Emergency services responded to a British Transport Police alert of an adult male jumping from the viaduct, carrying the East Coast Rail Line south of Durham Station, at 11.36, today.

It is thought the deceased walked onto the viaduct from the end of the station’s southbound platform.

A stretch of the A690, from North Road to Sutton Street, was closed to traffic while police, fire and ambulance services dealt with the situation.

Durham Police completed inquiries at the scene by 4.41pm, 20 minutes after Durham County Council reopened the road.

Network Rail put a short ‘stop’ on the use of the line while police carried out inquiries on the viaduct, but no trains were affected due to the current reduction in services.
