AN army of volunteers took to the streets yesterday to spread the word of support available in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Officers from across Middlesbrough Council were joined by representatives from Middlesbrough Football Club Foundation, totalling 150 people, to hand deliver nearly 70,000 leaflets on the Help Boro initiative, which calls for volunteers and vulnerable people that need support to come forward.

The drive followed latest major escalation in the UK's response to the global coronavirus pandemic where people were urged to stay home.

A number of council buildings are closed to the public for the foreseeable future, with staff working to deliver services through other channels.

The council is appealing to residents who can offer help and would be able to assist the vulnerable or isolated with shopping, cooking meals, the care of pets and health advice.

Mayor Andy Preston said: "We will come through this providing we take heed of the government's advice, and work together to support one another.

"That's what Help Boro is all about - making sure we're there for those in need, and offering to help out wherever we can."

"Our officers are working round the clock to maintain services - and if you need help, we want to hear from you.

"I'd also urge anyone who feels able to do so to consider volunteering if they can."
